Paddock Wood

Power + Line has recently been working with the established local firm, B&M McHugh, to cut back trackside vegetation and to clear drains running alongside the railway at Paddock Wood, near Tonbridge.

The drains and ditches had become completely entangled over a period of many years and were no longer fulfilling their function of allowing rainwater to run off both the railway land and the adjacent farmland.

The result was frequent flooding on both sides of the Network Rail boundary fence and some very disgruntled neighbours.

We have been able to cut back the vegetation, while leaving in place those trees which have some amenity value, and to clear out the overgrown drains. The exposed ditches immediately filled with water running off the  farmland  – although the water level will drop in a week or so as the water retained in the soil is channelled away.

This work was done on the Maidstone side of the track – we will shortly be turning our attention to the London side and giving that a haircut, too.

For the first time in years water can drain off the adjacent land - the farmer is very happy!
